The attached pictures are from Desert Shield, but still serve to demonstrate the creativity that some MARS members have used to get on the air from Iraq. Army helicopter pilot CW4 Ronald Smith used the zed loop antenna configuration to conduct phone patches from Iraq to Germany and stateside. It's made from speaker wire, pvc pipes, and a bit of 450 ohm ladder line.

Look closely at the helicopter picture and you can see Chief Warrant Officer Smith's 10-meter dipole suspended between cabin and tail. Smith, who took these pictures during an earlier deployment, is now stationed in Germany.
